Fig Jam
This easy fig jam highlights the natural sweetness of ripe figs. Serve it with toast, pastries, yogurt, cheese, or savory dishes.
Ingredients
- 1 kg ripe fresh figs
- 500 g granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest, optional
Method
- Wash the figs, remove the stems, and cut the fruit into quarters.
- Place the figs, sugar, lemon juice, and optional zest in a heavy saucepan. Stir and leave for about 30 minutes so the fruit begins releasing its juices.
- Bring the mixture gently to a boil, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
- Reduce the heat and simmer for 30–45 minutes. Stir regularly and break up the softened figs with a spoon.
- Test the consistency by placing a small amount on a chilled plate. Let it cool briefly, then push it with a finger. If it wrinkles and does not immediately flow back, the jam is ready.
- Remove the pan from the heat. For a smoother texture, carefully mash or blend the jam.
- Spoon into clean jars, cool, cover, and refrigerate.
Tips
- Use fully ripe figs for the best flavor and texture.
- Stir more frequently as the jam thickens to prevent scorching.
- The jam will become firmer as it cools.
- Add a small pinch of cinnamon, cardamom, or vanilla for a flavored variation.
- For long-term room-temperature storage, follow a tested canning recipe and approved preserving procedures.
